Writing wasn’t my strong suit in school. In college, I
enjoyed writing several creative pieces. But I have always liked telling
stories. It wasn’t until later in my life that I realized that I wanted to write
stories based my early years. Not that I wanted to chronicle my life, or write
memoirs, I just wanted to write fiction. I can’t remember what my wife told me
yesterday, let alone exactly quote what my brother may have said to me, fifty
years ago, as he bandaged my arm and took me to the hospital.
However, I have recently found writing to be something of a
passion. I write with a relaxed, conversational style and relate stories
inspired by my experiences growing up in a small town in Massachusetts. Several
stories are being published and many more are in the works including a novella
about our annual visits to my aunt’s farm in Chesterhill, Ohio.
The exception, however, grew from another need. While a
librarian in an elementary school, I was looking for a children’s book about
geodes. There were none, so I wrote one called “Geo the Geode.” Its likable
little character introduces the non-fictional world of rocks in general and
geodes in particular. I also drew upon my photographic and artistic skills to
completely illustrate the 32-page book.
