LISBONS SIGNPOST Inspired by the sign post on the hit TV show M.A.S.H., I created this sign post for the City of Lisbon, Iowa. The work is 8' 6" tall and shows the 17 US cities named Lisbon plus Lisbon Portugal. The sign will be stored in the Lisbon History and Cultural Center and placed outside in downtown Lisbon for special events such as the annual "Sauerkraut Days" celebration. The goal was to make the sign look old, so I reused boards from old pallets and distressed them a little. Hand lettering in a variety of fonts adds spontaneity and visual interest. With the collaboration of my daughter, Heather, we "antiqued" the boards with touches of gray paint. The sign post was unveiled on July 25, 2008 when the trans Iowa RAGBRAI bicycle ride passed through Lisbon. |
